KASESE – The night watchman deployed at a local church in Kasese Municipality was discovered dead after unknown persons broke into the church premises and stole property valued at millions of shillings.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The deceased has been identified as Charles Bwambale Kabaya, aged 40, a resident of Kidodo Cell in Central Division, Kasese Municipality, and a security guard at St. Mark Railway Church of Uganda in Kasese District.
The deceased’s body was discovered by residents on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at around 10:30 AM lying in Kanyangeya Cell area, with a strong odour of suspected herbicides emanating from the scene.
The Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Maate Elly, noted that the residents notified their area chairperson upon the discovery, who subsequently reported the matter to the Police.
Maate added that the officers visited and documented the scene, retrieved the body, and conveyed it to the Kasese Municipal Health Centre Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Kabaya had been guarding St. Mark Railway Church of Uganda when it was broken into on the night of September 12, with property including a music system and a screen stolen.
The investigations further indicate that upon realizing the church had been burglarized while on his beat, the watchman disappeared from his duty station and was nowhere to be found when police responded.
Sources allege that the deceased called his relatives informing them of the theft incident and promised he was going to commit suicide since he was not ready to suffer in prison.
The police spokesperson has since confirmed that inquiries into the matter have been launched to establish the exact cause of death and the circumstances leading to the theft that preceded the tragedy.
