KAMPALA – The boda boda rider was on Saturday shot dead by a police officer in Ndejje-Kanaaba, in the suburb of Kampala, during the monthly National Cleaning Day exercise in the area.

The deceased, a rider, has been identified as Kizito Ronald Jjuuko, 38, according to the National ID found on him. He reportedly tried to force his way through the restricted area while riding his motorcycle.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. while police officers from Ndejje Police Station were deployed to provide security for the exercise, a routine civic activity aimed at promoting environmental hygiene.

Reliable sources allege that the confrontation began when a motorcyclist attempted to bypass a secured perimeter established by law enforcement officials at the scene.

Police Constable Allan Okello, an officer attached to Ndejje Police Station, discharged his firearm under circumstances that remain unclear and he is currently under intensive investigation.

The rider succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Constable Okello was placed under police custody, signaling the institution’s commitment to accountability and transparency.

The Uganda Police Spokesperson, Rusoke Kituuma, has assured the public of a thorough investigation to establish the precise sequence of events that led to the fatal discharge of the officer’s weapon.

“The officer has been arrested, and investigations are underway to establish the circumstances under which he discharged his firearm, resulting in the death of the rider,” stated Rusoke.

The National Cleaning Day initiative, which typically brings together residents, local leaders, and security personnel in a collaborative effort to improve neighborhood cleanliness, has been overshadowed by this unfortunate event.
