KANUNGU – The casual laborer in Kanungu brutally severed his boss’s hand in a vicious attempted murder, acting after being interrogated over allegations of charcoal theft.

Sources allege that the suspect had been working as a casual laborer for the victim, specifically employed to burn charcoal in Omukibaare Village, Kayungwe Sub-county, Kanungu District.
However, tensions escalated after the victim received repeated information that the suspect was involved in stealing charcoal from the work site.
On the fateful Saturday, April 18, 2026, at about 1:00 PM, the victim arrived at the site and, in the presence of other workers, began interrogating the suspect regarding the alleged thefts.
During the heated exchange, the situation took a violent turn as the suspect became extremely aggressive and, armed with a sharp panga, attempted to behead the victim.
In a desperate act of self-defense, the victim raised his hand to shield his head and neck, only for the suspect’s blow to land with full force, completely severing his hand.
The Kigezi Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, stating that the police at Nyakabungo Police Station were notified and officers responded swiftly to the scene.
Relevant statements were recorded from eyewitnesses at the site, and the murder weapon, a blood-stained panga, was recovered from the scene and has been secured as a key exhibit.
The victim was rushed to Kambuga Hospital, where he is currently admitted and receiving medical attention. His condition is described as stable but serious.
“The victim is currently admitted at Kambuga Hospital, and his condition is stabilizing as he receives medication. We condemn this act of violence in the strongest terms possible. Attempting to take a life over a workplace dispute is both criminal and inhumane,” Maate stated.
Maate confirmed that efforts to arrest the suspect, Brian, who remains at large, are ongoing, and the case remains under active investigation.
