At the time of the incident, the deceased was eating lunch along with other fellow pupils, including Abisnguza Emmanuel, 8; Azahura Treasure, 7; Ainembabazi Mercy, 10; and Mugarura Onesmus, 8.
All the pupils were rescued and rushed to a nearby private clinic, from where Princess passed away on the way to the hospital for medical treatment.
The Kigezi Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed to the media that the police were notified, a death inquiry file was opened, and the scene of the crime was visited and documented.
The deceased’s body was retrieved and taken to Buyanja Health Center IV for a postmortem, while the victims were taken to Kambuga Hospital for medical attention.
Maate warned that this preventable tragedy, caused by a storm striking a building with visibly weak walls, serves as a clear signal for all schools to stop endangering children’s lives with similar structural flaws.
“This incident should serve as an eye-opener and a warning to many other schools with the same structural weaknesses. We must avoid endangering the lives of innocent schoolchildren,” Maate warned.
Meanwhile, every school head in the region has been put on notice to conduct immediate safety audits of their buildings, especially older ones, as the rainy season grows more intense.
