KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Police Bomb Squad are conducting an explosive analysis and examination following an unexpected explosion at a scrap yard in Mbale City that left four people with severe injuries.

Sources indicate the incident occurred on March 17, 2026, at a scrap workshop in St. Andrews Cell, South Central Ward, Industrial Division, during the offloading of scrap metal from a vehicle.

According to Deputy Police Spokesperson SSP Diana Nandawula, the four victims were part of a team offloading scrap metal from a vehicle when an unidentified object unexpectedly detonated.

Nandawula confirmed that emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, and the injured individuals were immediately evacuated to Mbale Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

She confirmed that a specialized team from the Police Bomb Squad was deployed to the workshop to conduct a thorough assessment of the area, where investigators recovered fragments linked to an explosive device.

“Following our notice of the incident, our emergency service team responded swiftly and evacuated the injured to the hospital. They are receiving treatment, though their conditions have not yet been publicly disclosed. Meanwhile, a specialized Police Bomb Squad recovered fragments of the suspected explosive device, which were transported for forensic analysis to determine its nature,” confirmed SSP Nandawula.

Police noted that the incident underscores a growing risk in the scrap metal trade, where live ordnance or discarded explosive devices can unknowingly enter the supply chain.

The public, especially scrap dealers and collectors, are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects to security agencies without delay.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the explosive’s origin continues, and authorities caution against handling unusual metallic items such as munitions remnants, shells, or wired devices.
