KAMPALA, UGANDA – Edith Katende Nabunya, the wife of detained National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

In a statement, Kyagulanyi said Edith passed away at around 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, following a hard-fought battle with cancer. He also expressed sorrow over the continued detention of her husband, describing it as unjust.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our dear sister and comrade, Edith Katende Mufumbiro, the wife of our Deputy Spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro. Edith passed on after 3:00 a.m. today following a hard-fought battle with cancer. At the time of her passing, her dear husband Waiswa remains detained at Luzira Upper Prison for no crime whatsoever. His only crime is speaking out against injustice and misrule,” part of the post read.
Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro was arrested and charged on October 30, 2025, with incitement to commit an offense contrary to Section 21(1) of the Penal Code Act.
The state alleges that on September 4, 2025, he incited NUP supporters to commit offenses against security personnel, including murder.
Mufumbiro faces additional charges of holding an unlawful assembly and military drilling alongside 10 others. He has been remanded to Luzira Prison after being denied bail multiple times.
