Uganda Police Report Mixed Results in 2024 Crime Statistics

National – Uganda’s 2024 crime statistics, recently released by Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba, reveal a decline in child abuse and torture cases, but a worrying increase in rape and cybercrime incidents.

A total of 787 cases of child abuse and torture were reported to the police in 2024, marking a 9% decrease from the 866 cases recorded in 2023.

The North Kyoga region had the highest number of cases, with 126 reported incidents, followed by KMP North, Wamala, Busoga East, and Albertine.

In contrast, rape cases saw a 5.7% increase, with 1,667 cases reported in 2024 compared to 1,577 in 2023.

A total of 1,667 female adults were victims of rape, and 594 suspects were charged in court, awaiting trial. Rwizi region had the highest number of rape cases in 2023, with 144 reported incidents.

Cybercrime cases skyrocketed by 93.5% in 2024, with 474 cases reported compared to 245 in 2023. This surge resulted in a loss of Ugx. 72,125,613,915, with only Ugx. 420,030,000 recovered.

Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba expressed gratitude to the public for lodging their complaints, which enabled the compilation of the Annual Crime Report.

These statistics highlight the need for continued efforts to address child abuse, rape, and cybercrime in Uganda.
