RUKIGA, UGANDA – The Minister of State for Internal Affairs, General David Muhoozi, has commissioned a series of community development projects constructed by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in Rukiga District.

The projects, executed as part of civil-military cooperation activities ahead of the 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary, mark a significant boost to local infrastructure.

The commissioned projects include a modern two-classroom block at Katungu Primary School, new staff quarters at Kitanga Health Centre III, and the newly constructed Nyakarambi-Kangondo bridge, among others.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremonies, Gen. Muhoozi praised the UPDF for delivering high-quality infrastructure that directly addresses community needs.

He reflected on the UPDF’s transformative journey from a historically distant and fearsome institution to a present-day, pro-people force working hand-in-hand with citizens for the nation’s collective good.

“The UPDF has fundamentally changed into a pro-people force, working hand-in-hand with citizens for the collective good of the nation. This stands in stark contrast to past regimes where the army was often perceived as distant and fearsome,” Gen. Muhoozi stated.

Katungu Primary School Headteacher, Ms. Ninsiima Judith, expressed particular enthusiasm for the new classroom block, revealing it relieved the severe pressure on a school where over 600 pupils had been crammed into just three existing classrooms.

“We had only three classroom blocks struggling to accommodate over 600 pupils. This additional two-classroom block is a tremendous relief, and we are profoundly grateful to the UPDF for selecting our school for this vital support,” Ms. Ninsiima said.

While expressing her gratitude, the Headteacher also outlined ongoing challenges, including a shortage of teachers, other dilapidated classroom structures, and general insecurity within the school environment.

The Chairperson of LC I Kitinda Village, Mr. Musoke Innocent, echoed local leadership’s appreciation, commending the UPDF’s tangible contribution to the community.

“The UPDF has done a commendable job in constructing this block for our school. This is tangible development that we can see and use,” Musoke affirmed.

Earlier in the day, Major Kiconco Tabaro, the Spokesperson for the 2nd Infantry Division, informed the press that similar project commissioning ceremonies were underway across other districts in the Kigezi sub-region, including Kabale, Rubanda, Kisoro, Kanungu, and Rukungiri.

The event in Rukiga was graced by several dignitaries, including aspiring Members of Parliament Dr. Sylvia Alinaitwe and Hon. Capt. Damson Christmas Kivumba, as well as aspiring LC V Chairperson Michael Kwarikunda Mbareba, among others.

The projects symbolize the Tarehe Sita anniversary’s theme of celebrating the UPDF’s commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty while actively participating in the socio-economic transformation of Uganda.
