Bishop Rubaramira Champions Financial Literacy as Key Weapon Against Poverty

KISORO, UGANDA – Bishop Callist Rubaramira of Kabale Diocese has urged Christians to champion financial literacy as a fundamental weapon in the fight against poverty within their households.

The Bishop delivered the message on Saturday during the confirmation of 283 believers in the Catholic faith in a Holy Eucharist service at St. Peter’s Gisoro Catholic Parish in Kisoro Municipality.

Bishop Rubaramira urged the community to use Parish Development Model funds productively for family welfare and economic progress, warning against their misuse on luxuries or unproductive ventures.

He further urged parents to mentor their children in entrepreneurship, calling for a generational mindset shift to end youth dependency on parents for basic financial needs.

“Teach your children how to start income-generating initiatives. It’s quite absurd that many young people still rely on their parents for basic financial obligations, including church offerings,” the Bishop cautioned.

Paul Nzabandora, the Parish Council Chairperson, echoed the day’s theme of development and gratitude, expressing appreciation to the Bishop for shepherding the confirmands.

He reported significant community progress, revealing that this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal Fund (BAAF) is financing a new multipurpose building, while sub-parishes are actively constructing new churches and pastoral residences.

Nzabandora added that they are engaged in activities including the acquisition of over 30 computers for St. Peter’s Vocational Secondary School and have advanced plans to construct a four-classroom block at the same institution.

Rev. Fr. Alfonse Mbabazi, the Parish Priest, expressed profound gratitude for the Bishop’s pastoral visit and commended parents and lay leaders for their dedicated role in preparing the youth for confirmation.

The event painted a holistic picture of a faith community strengthening its spiritual foundations while simultaneously laying concrete plans for its educational and economic future, guided by calls for financial wisdom and responsibility.
