KISORO, UGANDA – The Kisoro District Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Dan Ndikumwami, has called on parents to engage their children in productive activities during the long third-term holiday.

The call follows the release of students across the country. Candidates from P7, S4, and S6 have finished their exams and are now on an extended vacation, joined by other learners.

The Deputy RDC, Mr. Ndikumwami, cautioned parents against leaving their children without productive engagement during the holidays, stating that idleness could lead to involvement in criminal activities.

He warned that a lack of supervision and purposeful activity creates a dangerous vacuum, leaving young people vulnerable to negative influences and criminality.

He emphasized that parents must take a proactive role in occupying their children’s time with constructive tasks to safeguard them from these influences.

“When children are left at home with little to do, that idleness can easily lead them into criminal behavior. So I want to encourage parents to assign productive duties such as grazing animals, assisting with family farming, or other domestic chores,” Mr. Ndikumwami stated.

Ndikumwami specifically warned parents about the unique dangers of children attending political rallies, which he noted are often associated with violence.

He urged heightened vigilance to steer children away from such gatherings, emphasizing that engaging them in constructive activities is crucial to protect them from serious injury or harm.

“Parents must be vigilant and ensure their children are engaged in constructive activities. It is crucial to protect them from situations that may put them at risk, including dangerous rallies,” he stressed.

The Deputy RDC’s message serves as a critical reminder of parental responsibility during the long break, framing it as a necessary measure to ensure the safety and positive development of the district’s youth.
