The launch, held at the Kicwamba Sub-County headquarters on Friday, culminated in a vibrant exhibition where six beneficiary schools showcased remarkable community-led innovations in conservation and waste management.

The event brought together students and staff from Kyambura, Kicwamba, and Katunguru Primary Schools, Kicwamba High School, Kirugu Secondary School, and Katunguru Seed School, highlighting a unified commitment to a greener future.

According to WWF Uganda Communication Officer Happy Ali, the project’s core mission is to establish green practices in six schools, thereby ensuring all students aged 7 to 18 benefit from a healthy, green learning environment.

Furthermore, it provides a crucial platform for students to access and share knowledge, driving sustainable and climate-resilient change within their communities.

“This is more than just tree planting; it is about building a movement. We are counting on you to mobilize your communities and spread these new ways of adopting, practicing, and managing climate change,” Ali stated.

Green Schools Project Coordinator Matsika Jenet explained that the curriculum integrates environmental conservation and other practical skills through school gardening, actively engaging youth in climate action to transform livelihoods.

She added that the day’s exhibition was a key component, designed to raise public awareness about recycling and reducing plastic waste, even turning it into a source of school income.

Students Kemigisha Joanita and Twesenjerize Innocent personally expressed their gratitude for WWF’s intervention, highlighting the project’s transformative impact.

The students attested that the project’s training and provision of vegetable seedlings have improved their diets, boosted academic performance, and unlocked creativity and income-generating skills for the future.

The WWF Green Schools Project in Rubirizi stands as a powerful testament to how empowering youth with knowledge and practical skills can ignite a community-wide revolution in environmental conservation.
