RUKIGA, UGANDA – A political campaign event for the National Unity Platform (NUP) in western Uganda turned tragic on Tuesday after a supporter died in an accident while escorting a newly nominated candidate.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The deceased has been identified as Patrick Ndyamugumya, 35, a resident of Kigara Cell, Kigara Parish, Kamwezi Sub-county. He died in an incident at approximately 4:30 PM along the Rushebeya-Mparo murram road.
According to preliminary accounts, the vehicle carrying Ndyamugumya and other supporters was part of a convoy traveling to the candidate’s campaign launch in Mparo.
As the convoy passed through Kitwe Cell, the left-side passenger door swung open, causing Ndyamugumya to fall from the moving vehicle.
He was then fatally run over by the vehicle’s rear tires and pronounced dead at the scene.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed that officers visited and documented the scene and that the body was transported to Mparo Health Centre IV for a postmortem before its release to the family.
“The scene was visited and documented by our officers. The body was transported to Mparo Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination and has since been handed over to the bereaved family,” stated ASP Maate.
Maate added that the vehicle and its driver are still at large, prompting an active police search operation to locate and apprehend the driver.
The accident has cast a shadow over the start of the NUP candidate’s campaign in the region, highlighting the dangers often associated with the enthusiastic, yet sometimes chaotic, nature of political processions.
