RUBIRIZI, UGANDA – Authorities in Rubirizi District have issued a stern warning against the practice and belief in witchcraft, labeling it a “backward culture” that has no place in modern society.

The warning was delivered during a Tuesday community security meeting in Nyangorogoro II, Butoha Parish, Magambo Sub-county, which was organized in response to a surge in reports about witchcraft-related activities.

Rubirizi District Community Liaison Officer Twesigye Caleb, who is spearheading a drive to address rising insecurity and domestic unrest, revealed that witchcraft has become alarmingly widespread, with police registering over ten formal cases linked to the practice.

He directly called on suspected witch doctors to cease their activities, emphasizing that such beliefs fuel fear and conflict, and framed witchcraft as a “false belief” that must be overcome through a change in mindset.

Caleb also warned the community against domestic violence, urging women to refrain from spreading rumors and youth to shun drug abuse.

The Officer in Charge of Magambo Police Station, Arinitwe John, urged residents to mind their language and uphold good morals, arguing that belief in witchcraft is a symptom of deeper societal issues.

“The main goal is to promote a mindset change. The public must understand that such beliefs are a result of ignorance, poverty, and lack of education. We advise the community to ignore witchcraft rumors and stop believing that witch doctors have any real powers,” Officer John explained.

The police initiative was backed by local leaders, with Nyangorogoro II’s LC1 Chairperson, Mr. Byamugisha Saverino, and Magambo Sub-county’s LC III Vice Chairperson, Hon. Kinjinia Molly, commending the outreach effort.

The leaders encouraged residents to focus on practical solutions, urging them to prioritize health, work hard, and send their children to school to combat ignorance.

They affirmed that witchcraft is not real in a modern society and that faith and hard work are the true means to fight poverty.

Police and local leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to building a strong partnership with the community, pledging to continue sensitization and awareness campaigns across the district to foster a safer and more enlightened society.
