Double Tragedy in Kisoro: Two Die by Hanging Within 48 Hours

Just 48 hours, that is all it took for Kisoro District to record two suicide-by-hanging incidents, claiming the lives of an octogenarian and a young father. Police have since opened investigations, though no foul play is suspected, as authorities call for urgent mental health interventions to prevent further tragedies.

KISORO – Kisoro District has recorded two heartbreaking suicide-by-hanging incidents within a 48-hour window over the weekend, leaving a young father and an elderly octogenarian dead.

The two deceased, both from Kisoro District, have been identified as Ndagijimana Andrew, 80, who was found hanged on Saturday, and Mbonyebyombi Brian, 33, who also took his own life the following day.

Reliable sources indicate that on the evening of September 5, 2026, at about 7:00 PM in Mataramba village, Gisozi Parish, Muramba Sub County, Andrew was discovered hanging from a rope at his house.

The wife of the deceased, Nyirayanze Tereza, allegedly left her husband at home and went to the Republic of Congo to till her land.

On coming back, she found the door of the house locked from inside. Her attempts to push the door open were futile, and she called her neighbors, who broke in only to find the lifeless body of Ndagijimana Andrew hanging from a rope inside.

Barely 24 hours later, on September 6, 2026, at around 10:00 AM, another tragedy struck in Chahi village, Northern Division, Kisoro Municipality, after Mbonyebyombi Brian, 33, was discovered hanging in his bedroom.

Reliable sources indicate that Brian, who had in the past attempted to commit suicide several times, returned home drunk on the fateful day and requested his wife to serve him food.

The wife, unaware that tragedy was about to strike, went back into their bedroom a few moments later and shockingly found the lifeless body of her husband Brian hanging from a rope in his latest attempt to commit suicide.

The Kigezi Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, confirmed to this reporter that police were notified of the incidents and have since opened investigations into both, though preliminary reports indicate no foul play.

Tumushime condemned the act of committing suicide, underscoring the urgent need for robust mental health support systems and deeper community solidarity to shield vulnerable individuals from despair.

“We are investigating both tragic incidents of Ndagijimana Andrew and Mbonyebyombi Brian, who both took their own lives by hanging within a space of 28 hours. We strongly condemn acts of people taking their own lives, thus encouraging individuals undergoing stress, depression, or facing financial difficulties to always seek support from counselors, religious leaders, or trusted friends,” Tumushime noted.

The two cases have once again highlighted the growing concern over mental health challenges in communities across the Kigezi Region, where cultural stigmas often prevent individuals from seeking professional help.
