RUBIRIZI – The Rubirizi District Local Government, in partnership with Reproductive Health Uganda, has unveiled a five-year Environmental Work Plan to promote sustainability, conserve natural resources, and safeguard tourism attractions across the region.

The comprehensive work plan that seeks to reverse environmental degradation that has threatened the district’s rich natural endowment, including forests, wetlands, crater lakes, wildlife, and part of Queen Elizabeth National Park, was launched on Saturday at the district headquarters.

Speaking at the launch, Rubirizi Environment Officer Agaba Aggrey Patriot warned against deforestation, wetland encroachment, water pollution, and bush burning, calling them threats to the district’s forests, crater lakes, wildlife, and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

He emphasized that environmental degradation has fueled climate change and unpredictable weather, urging every citizen to embrace tree planting, proper waste management, and sustainable farming as a collective responsibility.

“Rubirizi is one of the districts in Uganda richly endowed with natural resources, including forests, wetlands, crater lakes, wildlife, and part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. However, residents have been degrading the environment through deforestation, wetland encroachment, and poor waste disposal, which has threatened conservation efforts,” Agaba noted.

Agaba called on all residents to join hands in protecting the environment, stressing that conservation is essential for safeguarding Rubirizi’s resources and securing a better future for generations to come.

Reproductive Health Uganda Executive Director Anet Kyarimpa reaffirmed her organization’s commitment to the environmental initiative, emphasizing that environmental sustainability, health, and community well-being are deeply interconnected.

She urged parents to plant home gardens to combat child malnutrition and ensure balanced diets, while also warning that environmental destruction directly undermines food security, health, and essential community services.

“Many children suffer from malnutrition because families do not grow nutritious foods at home. This will help children get a balanced diet and have good health. When we destroy our environment, we also destroy good service delivery in the community,” Kyarimpa explained.

Kyarimpa further urged parents to prioritize their children’s education, stressing that an educated community is better equipped to protect natural resources, and pledged that Reproductive Health Uganda will continue promoting both health and environmental sustainability.

Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Nshekanabo Amidu stressed the importance of preserving Rubirizi’s rich natural resources and tourism potential for future generations, calling on both government and community to take responsibility.

He expressed concern over rampant environmental degradation, including tree cutting, swamp clearing, and water pollution, and urged the government to provide energy-saving stoves to reduce reliance on firewood.

“Natural resources are of great value to human life, and it is the responsibility of government and the community to protect them. But I think the government needs to bring residents energy-saving stoves so that they stop cutting trees for firewood and reduce environmental degradation,” Nshekanabo urged.

Nshekanabo called on residents to take the Environmental Action Plan seriously and directed security agencies to arrest offenders, warning that continued destruction undermines development and the district’s hard-won reputation.

The five-year Environmental Work Plan offers a comprehensive strategy to address environmental challenges while promoting sustainable development across Rubirizi District.

The initiative focuses on strengthening environmental governance, promoting sustainable resource management, enhancing community participation, protecting tourism attractions, and integrating health with environmental sustainability.

Stakeholders have since expressed optimism that collaboration between the district government, Reproductive Health Uganda, and the community will yield meaningful results in safeguarding Rubirizi’s rich natural heritage.
