The 12-member committee, established by the Royal Clan of Ababiito on August 28, 2026, has been deliberating daily since August 31 under the chairmanship of Omusuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi.
The Friday session, which ran from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, marked the culmination of intensive consultations, elevating George Desmond Kamurasi, son of George Desmond (Jimmy) Mugenyi and grandson of the late King George Rukidi III, as the rightful heir.
The historic selection has now received resounding high-level endorsement from Uganda’s national leadership, signaling broad support for a succession that honors the cherished customs, precedents, and laws of the Toro Kingdom.
The President dispatched a senior cabinet minister-led delegation to Fort Portal for extensive consultations with key stakeholders, after which the committee was convinced of a wide consensus around Kamurasi’s succession.
According to Tooro tradition, the formal announcement of the new king will occur only after the late Omukama’s burial, a protocol Omusuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi has affirmed must be observed before any official declaration.
The decision to share these developments ahead of that formal announcement was taken to preempt social media speculation and prevent confusion, ensuring the kingdom’s transition proceeds with the dignity such a historic moment demands.
The late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV passed away on August 26, 2026, in Texas, USA, at age 34. His untimely death marked the end of a reign that began when he was crowned at just three years old in 1995, following the passing of his father, King Kaboyo II.
THE PRIVATE LIFE OF TOORO’S NEW KING: MARRIAGE, FAMILY, AND A LIFE ABROAD
George Desmond Kamurasi, 36, has spent most of his adult life in Britain, living quietly away from the palace politics of Tooro. He recently married a British woman and the couple has a young son now the Prince.
On the royal side, Kamurasi is the son of Prince George Desmond Jimmy Mugenyi, who is the younger brother of the late King Olimi Kaboyo III. This makes him a first cousin of King Oyo and places him within the established Babiito succession line.
