The event drew a large crowd of senior citizens who eagerly received the brand-new bedding supplies. The gesture was a way of appreciating them for overwhelmingly supporting the ruling NRM party in the just-concluded general elections.
Speaking to the beneficiaries, Rugambwa expressed her deep appreciation to the people of Rukiga for the love they have consistently shown to President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM party.
She emphasized that the confidence the people have placed in the ruling party has strengthened the area’s national voice, allowing leaders to directly lobby for resources to support struggling communities.
“Your trust has helped place many of your own in the front seat of government. This means we now have people who can directly lobby for resources and bring them to our struggling communities,” SPA Peace told the gathering.
Through the Boona Bageigahare Nyekundire Initiative, and in collaboration with elected NRM leaders, the Presidential Advisor pledged to roll out more programs aimed at lifting families out of poverty.
She revealed that the gesture was a direct response to findings from her earlier visits to older persons’ homes in the district, where she discovered numerous families in distress, with elderly members lacking basic sleeping facilities.
“During my tours, I saw families that were struggling, with older persons who had nowhere comfortable to sleep. This distribution of mattresses, bedsheets, and blankets is a fulfillment of the promise I made to them to intervene and restore their dignity,” she added.
The beneficiaries, some of whom walked with canes and leaned on each other for support, were overcome with joy as they expressed profound gratitude to the Presidential Advisor for remembering them and honoring her word.
Several elders shared the daily struggles they face, revealing that many have been abandoned by their children and are now raising grandchildren with no steady source of income.
Despite their hardships, they expressed that the donated mattress and blanket were a welcome blessing, and they thanked Ms. Rugambwa for not forgetting them.
“We face a lot of challenges. We struggle to meet day-to-day needs while taking care of our grandchildren. This mattress and blanket are a blessing. We thank Ms. Rugambwa for not forgetting us,” one Alice an elderly woman said.
The elders also took the opportunity to thank President Museveni for the government’s Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) program.
They noted that the monthly cash support they receive through SAGE has been instrumental in helping them access basic necessities, and they appealed for its continuation and expansion.
