Kabale, Uganda – Police in Kabale have launched a manhunt for suspect(s) who allegedly stole a gun from a security guard at Pearl Hotel in the early hours of Thursday, April 10, 2025.

According to sources, an SAR rifle, number 564210028-15120, with two rounds of ammunition, was stolen from Osbert Byonanebye, a 23-year-old security guard attached to Ruhama Veterans Security Services.

Sources also indicate that around 4:20 am at Pearl Hotel, Kigongi cell, Central ward, Kabale municipality, the victim allegedly fell asleep on duty, allowing an unknown person to pull the gun from the guard and run away towards Rushaki.

The Kigezi police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, stating that the case has been opened at Kabale Central Police Station, and inquiries are underway to establish the truth.

Maate further urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or individuals to the authorities immediately.

“A security guard was allegedly caught sleeping on the job, allowing an unknown person to steal his gun and escape towards Rushaki. The victim chased after the thief but couldn’t catch up. The case has been filed at Kabale Central Police Station, and investigations are underway. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or individuals to the authorities immediately.” Said Elly Maate.

This incident comes amid concerns about security in the region, where a private security guard was recently shot while attempting to steal food from Kabale Modern Market.
