Rukiga, Uganda – Rukiga District is abuzz with excitement as Dr. Sylvia Alinaitwe, the District Women Member of Parliament contender, has launched a series of initiatives that have placed her at the forefront of winning the seat.
The distribution of coffee seedlings to citizens within the district, which began in 2023, has been a resounding success, with every household growing at least one coffee plant.
This initiative was further bolstered by the distribution of hoes and pangas in 2024, empowering local farmers to tend to their crops effectively.
Dr. Alinaitwe, who is also the Deputy Managing Director at National Water and Sewerage Corporation in charge of Finance and Corporate Strategy, has demonstrated her commitment to women’s empowerment and economic development through the introduction of ‘Akabox’ savings groups.
These groups have provided a platform for local women to save and access financial resources, enabling them to improve their livelihoods.
The coffee farming project, which aligns with President Museveni’s call for developmental initiatives to combat poverty in Uganda, has been a game-changer for the district.
At a recent distribution of coffee seeds at Kantare Playground in Kantare Kashambya Sub-county, Dr. Alinaitwe emphasized the importance of the project, highlighting its potential to create employment opportunities and enhance the region’s economic prospects.
Taking her initiative a step further, Dr. Alinaitwe announced plans to establish a coffee processing facility in the district.
This facility will add value to the coffee grown in the region, creating employment opportunities and boosting the local economy.
Uganda’s coffee industry has long been a significant contributor to the country’s economy, with the country typically ranked among the top 10 coffee-producing countries worldwide.
The country’s climate and geography make it an ideal location for coffee production, and initiatives like Dr. Alinaitwe’s are set to further boost the industry.
Dr. Sylvia Alinaitwe’s tireless efforts in promoting women’s empowerment, economic development, and agricultural growth have endeared her to the Rukiga District community, boosting her popularity and earning her widespread respect and admiration.
