Rukiga, Uganda – A controversy has erupted in Rukiga district NRM party elections, with prominent businesswoman Ruth Katambira threatening to petition the NRM national Registrar over alleged impunity practices.
Mrs. Katambira, owner of Muhanga Summit Hotel, claimed unfair treatment during the nomination process for the NRM Chairperson entrepreneur league.
Ruth Katambira’s nomination was marred by controversy after the Registrar declined to include her on the list at the NRM offices in Muhanga Town on Thursday, citing late reporting.
On Friday, May 23, 2025, she was blocked at the district election site gate for hours before being allowed in after a confrontation.
Mrs. Katambira alleged she was denied access to the eligible voters’ list, despite having one from the national offices in Kampala.
She claimed the Rukiga district NRM Registrar, Twaha Yaryakumanyi Selubowa, mocked her and refused to recognize the list.
In response, Mr. Selubowa confirmed Mrs. Katambira’s late reporting, citing a set deadline, and disputed the validity of her list, stating he had a sufficient list of eligible voters.
The controversy highlights challenges faced by party members in exercising their rights, with Mrs. Katambira’s petition threat underscoring the need for transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
