Kampala, Uganda – Police in Mbarara have confirmed the confession of a suspected murderer in the case of 25-year-old Akakunda Rita, a resident of Bwizibwera cell, Rutooma Town Council in Mbarara District.
The body was reported to the authorities by Veterinary doctor Karegyeya Brighton, prompting a swift police response.
Two suspects, identified as Byamakama Javira Mawuruba, 19, a casual worker, and Kembabazi Winnie, 30, sister-in-law to the deceased, were arrested to assist with investigations.
According to Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituma, a team of investigators processed the crime scene, and with the assistance of a police dog named Honey, tracked a scent to blood-stained clothes belonging to Byamukama at Namutebi Jolly’s home.
Byamukama confessed to the crime, alleging that Kembabazi had paid him to kill Rita due to issues with her sister-in-law.
Kituma stated that the police are working to gather more evidence and piece together the circumstances surrounding the murder as the investigation continues, with the suspects currently in custody.
