Kisoro, Uganda – The Nyamagana Women Poultry Association in Kisoro Municipality has launched a poultry-keeping project aimed at lifting its members out of poverty.

The initiative, supported by Kisoro Municipality hopeful MP Dr. Leo Mfitimana, aims to empower women through a sustainable and income-generating venture.

According to Justine Niyonsaba, Chairperson of the Association, poultry keeping was chosen for its manageability and potential to improve livelihoods.

“The income generated from this project will be a game-changer for us, enabling us to not only develop our households but also significantly improve our living standards, providing a better future for ourselves and our families,” Niyonsaba said.

Niyonsaba passionately urged women to take ownership of their development, emphasizing the importance of supporting leaders who prioritize empowering them through initiatives that foster economic growth and self-sustainability.

The women highlighted the benefits of poultry keeping, including access to eggs for nutrition and surplus sales to generate income, which can be used to purchase essential items, particularly for pregnant mothers.

Dr. Mfitimana has pledged to support the Association with over 120 hens, a gesture appreciated by the women, who however still face challenges including limited access to water, poultry feeds, and other essential supplies.

He emphasized that poultry keeping offers multiple benefits, including the use of chicken waste as manure to maintain soil fertility and improve crop yields.

“This initiative will have a profound ripple effect, not only economically empowering women but also significantly enhancing food security in their households, thereby fostering a brighter future for their families,” Dr. Mfitimana said.
