Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Police have confirmed the arrest of 29 suspects connected to the brutal murder of a police officer attached to Bisheshe police station in Ibanda District.

Police Constable Chemonges Suleiman, 28, was tragically killed on Sunday by an irate mob while guarding the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus, an inmate who died at Nyabuhikye Government Ibanda District.

The mob’s attack followed their knowledge of Suleiman’s involvement in Kahangire’s arrest and subsequent detention. Despite firing warning shots, Suleiman was overwhelmed and killed.

According to Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma, an SMG rifle and 16 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene before body was taken to Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary for a postmortem examination.

“Our officers responded to the scene, recovering an SMG rifle and 16 rounds of ammunition. PC Suleiman’s body was taken to the Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary. Investigations are ongoing. We want to assure the public that all suspects involved in the criminal act shall be arrested and brought to book,” said ACP Kituuma.

Authorities condemned the violent act, describing it as criminal and unacceptable with the incident highlights the need for cooperation between law enforcement and the community to prevent such tragic events.

Kituuma further urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to report grievances through appropriate legal channels.
