Kampala, Uganda<\/strong> – Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has officially taken over electricity distribution in Uganda, marking the end of Umeme’s 20-year concession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The handover ceremony was held on March 31, 2025, at the Lugogo office, with UEDCL Managing Director Paul Mwesigwa outlining the company’s transition plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Mwesigwa said that the company has committed to business continuity, uninterrupted service delivery, and efficient management of the country’s electricity distribution network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further confirmed that the company plans to enhance service reliability and invest in advanced technology to improve electricity distribution, contributing to Uganda’s socio-economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, UEDCL has welcomed over 2,200 Umeme employees, including some who joined Umeme in 2005. The company conducted a recruitment process in a record 75 days, interviewing over 2,995 people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Dr. Canon Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, confirmed the handover of Umeme’s assets to UEDCL, ensuring a seamless transition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister Ruth Nankabirwa advised former Umeme customers to look for “UEDCL Light” on telecom menus, replacing “Yaka”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to efficient service delivery in the energy sector, ensuring uninterrupted electricity access for all Ugandans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transition marks a significant shift in Uganda’s energy sector, with UEDCL poised to lead the next chapter in electricity distribution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
