KISORO – Leaders in Kisoro Municipality have moved to reassure the business community of their unwavering commitment to restoring order following the recent enforcement of a trade directive.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The assurance was issued on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, as municipal leaders visited Kisoro Old Market to sensitize and guide vendors on new market regulations.
The visit follows the closure of Gatimba Market, which was ordered to cease operations due to non-compliance with the new trade directives, leading to the relocation of many of its vendors to Kisoro Old Market.
Addressing a mixed crowd of anxious newcomers and seasoned stallholders, Municipal Mayor John Mbonigaba struck a tone of calm while urging patience and cooperation in creating a more organized trading environment.
The mayor dismissed swirling speculation about the sale of the land formerly occupied by Gatimba Market, clarifying that the property remains available as municipal authorities weigh options that benefit traders and the wider community.
“We are not here to chase you away; we are here to organize you. The land remains available, no deal has been made behind your backs, and my door remains open to every trader who wants a legal, peaceful place to do business,” Mbonigaba stated.
He pledged to work with local leaders to ensure every vendor in Kisoro operates from a legal, recognized location, allowing all traders to conduct business peacefully without the threat of future eviction.
According to municipal authorities, the strict enforcement of the trade order is not merely punitive but a strategic intervention to promote organized trade and drastically improve sanitation across Kisoro Municipality.
Kisoro Old Market remains the official reception point for displaced traders as the municipality continues its drive to balance commerce with compliance.
