KISORO – The leadership of Kisoro Municipality, in collaboration with sports promoters, has stepped up discussions to upgrade and transform the current Shaaza Main Stadium into a modern sports facility in memory of the late Minister Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke.

This was revealed by the SC Volcanoes Vice President, Flight Captain Arthur Mugisha Ruchakatsi (Bubu), shortly after the swearing-in ceremony of Kisoro Municipality’s newly elected mayor on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

Flanked by a growing sense of optimism, Captain Mugisha confirmed that high-level discussions involving SC Volcanoes, the Kisoro Municipality, and the Kisoro District leadership are progressing steadily.

According to Mugisha, the Kisoro leaders seek to upgrade the Shaaza grounds into a modern stadium for top-tier football, ending the district’s long wait for a competitive venue.

He added that the facility is proposed to be named after the late Minister Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, a devoted advocate for youth and sports who passed away in September 2024 at the age of 50.

Captain Mugisha confidently stated that with new municipal and district councils in place, there is fresh momentum to finalize negotiations and bring home matches back to Kisoro.

“With the new municipal and district councils supporting us, we now have a good opportunity to turn the old Shaaza grounds into a modern stadium. This is a fitting honor for the late Minister Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, a leader who believed that sports could change our community,” stated Captain Mugisha.

Captain Mugisha called on the new political leadership to practice transparent and corruption-free governance, focusing on equality, accountability, and better services for youth and women in business.

He also urged Kisoro’s youth to support SC Volcanoes FC, a fast-growing football club that recently won the regional third division championship and is now pushing for promotion to the FUFA Big League.

Captain Mugisha noted that having a modern stadium would boost tourism centered on Kisoro’s famous mountain gorillas, while also hosting concerts, trade fairs, and community events to transform local livelihoods.
