The Kigezi regional police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed that arrested individuals face charges including possession of narcotics (opium), striking at the heart of drug abuse plaguing several villages, obstructing police officers on duty, and illegal entry and stay.
Maate added that all case files have since been submitted to the Resident State Attorney (RSA) for perusal and possible sanctioning, as the police move to ensure the suspects are prosecuted without delay.
“Our officers carried out a two-day operation in Kisoro and arrested about 20 suspected criminals. Among them we have the main suspect on murder charges. Others are charged with drug possession, obstructing police officers, and illegal entry. We have so far sent their case files to the Resident State Attorney for action,” confirmed Elly Maate.
Meanwhile, the police said more disruptive operations are planned across the entire Kigezi region, as many criminals have run away from major towns to upcountry towns while trade order was being enforced.
