Tragedy and Arrests: Landslide Kills Two Girls, Dozens Detained in Kigezi

KABALA – Police have witnessed a dramatic weekend marked by tragedy, as a deadly landslide claimed two toddlers and separate operations led to the arrest of dozens of suspects across the Kigezi region.

Kigezi Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the weekend deaths of two toddlers in a landslide and the arrest of at least 36 suspects, including six robbery suspects and 28 illegal miners.

One of the incidents occurred early Sunday morning when a landslide buried the home of the victims’ grandparents in Nyabiyonga Village, Murora Sub-county, Kisoro.

The landslide claimed two young sisters, aged 12 and 14.The two victims, identified as Musoni Brenda, 14, and Mujawimana Eseri, 12, had been sent to check on their elderly grandparents during school holidays.

Following the incident, the elderly couple, aged 70 and 60, survived with minor injuries and are receiving treatment at Chahafi Health Centre.

Separately, Kanungu police are holding in custody Shivan Orishaba, 26, for the alleged murder of two-and-a-half-year-old Salvan Akankwasa.

The child died on Saturday at Kihihi Health Centre after being assaulted by his stepmother, with whom he had been living for only two weeks.

In Rubanda district, following reports of armed robberies targeting late-night travellers, police arrested six suspects in an overnight operation.

The exercise, conducted between midnight and 5:00 am Sunday, led to the tracking and arrest of suspects. Among those detained are individuals previously on security watch lists and ex-convicts.

Separately, police arrested 28 illegal miners at the Kirwa Wolfram mining site in Kisoro district, including 25 Rwandan nationals who had unlawfully entered the country.

Police confirmed that, officials seized approximately 30 kilograms of suspected wolfram as part of the evidence in the operation.

Elly Maate stated that Inquiries are ongoing in both incidents and upon their completion, the suspects will be produced before a court of law to answer charges accordingly.
