RUBIRIZI, UGANDA – Rubirizi District has received a consignment of 100,500 mosquito nets from the Ministry of Health through the National Medical Stores, a significant boost to public health.

The consignment was handed over to district officials on Friday, April 10, 2026, marking a critical step in the government’s renewed fight against malaria in Uganda.

During the handover, National Medical Stores official Mr. Asimwe Jonas reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to distributing mosquito nets nationwide.

He observed that while progress has been made, malaria remains a leading cause of illness and death in Uganda, requiring collective action from every household to use the nets properly.

“The government is committed to distributing mosquito nets nationwide to fight malaria. I urge citizens to use the nets properly. While progress has been made, malaria remains a leading cause of illness and death in Uganda, a big challenge requiring collective action from every household,” noted Mr. Jonas.

Rubirizi District Health Officer Dr. Aida Nankyinga confirmed that the massive shipment of 100,500 mosquito nets is specifically tailored to the district’s urgent needs.

The DHO explained that Rubirizi is one of the areas hardest hit by malaria due to its swampy terrain and heavy seasonal rainfall, which create ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

“We have received 100,500 mosquito nets from the Ministry of Health, and we are ready to distribute them to every household in this district. Sleeping under a mosquito net is one of the best ways to prevent malaria, and we urge everyone to use them correctly,” Dr. Nankyinga said.

Dr. Nankyinga urged every citizen to play their part by using the nets correctly and consistently, especially for children under five and pregnant women, who are most vulnerable.

Rubirizi RDC Ahamedi Kinene thanked the government for supporting the district’s health efforts, calling the 100,500 mosquito nets a big relief during the rainy season, when mosquito breeding intensifies.

However, Mr. Kinene did not mince words when addressing the historical challenges of net misuse, issuing a stern warning that families must handle mosquito nets with care and use them properly.

He emphasized that residents must fix the nets properly over beds and avoid using them for other purposes like fishing or fencing, as this ensures they remain effective in preventing malaria.

“We are very grateful to the government for supporting our health efforts. This delivery of mosquito nets is a big relief to our community, especially now during the rainy season. But let me be clear, residents must fix the nets properly over beds and avoid using them for fishing or fencing,” said RDC Kinene.

The RDC further called upon community leaders, including LC chairpersons and religious leaders, to actively monitor the distribution and ensure the nets are used solely for their intended purpose.

The district health team will launch a sensitization campaign alongside the net distribution, teaching families how to properly hang and maintain the nets.
