NTUNGAMO, UGANDA – The town councils of Rubaare and Muhanga in the districts of Ntungamo and Rukiga have announced the demolition and removal of traders operating businesses along streets and major roads in their towns.

The development was announced by the two Town Council Clerks in a press statement and through this reporter’s engagement with the authorities following the ongoing wave of enforcement exercises in other towns.

In a public notice dated April 1, 2026, the Rubaare Town Clerk, Emmanuel Byamukama, declared that the enforcement exercise within the town will commence on April 15, 2026, and will proceed without compromise.

The Town Clerk said the operation targets problems disrupting urban planning and business order, aiming to restore order, decongest the central business area, and improve public safety along major roads.

Meanwhile, the Muhanga Town Clerk, Mr. Kakaire Herbert, confirmed that they will hold a comprehensive engagement with traders on Thursday next week over the enforcement process.

He added that the exercise is a nationwide enforcement, strictly following several laws, including the Local Government Act, Physical Planning Act, Trade and Licensing Act, Public Health Act, and the Market Act.

“We will hold a comprehensive engagement with traders on Thursday next week over the enforcement process. The exercise is a nationwide enforcement and is being implemented based on several laws that guide major towns and markets,” confirmed Kakaire.

During the exercise, authorities will dismantle all temporary structures, kiosks, and containers in the central business areas and along major roads.

Merchandise displayed outside shops, on walkways, and along road reserves will be confiscated or removed, and any unauthorized building developments or annexes will be demolished.

Public transport will be reorganized to end disorderly parking and illegal passenger pick-ups, and as the deadline approaches, street shop owners and street vendors are likely to face major disruption.
