RUKIGA, UGANDA – A truck transporting a public address system and a portable stage to a political rally has crashed in Rukiga district, leaving its occupants in critical condition.

The accident occurred along the Kakirimizi-Buchundura Road in the hilly Kashambya Sub-County, casting a shadow over campaign events as polling days draw closer.

The truck, registration UBA 5430, was heavily loaded with audio equipment and a stage destined for a rally supporting Parliamentary Aspirant Hon. Kiconco Patrick Katabazi (KP).

Preliminary reports from investigative sources indicate the driver lost control on the treacherous terrain. Sources further allege the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time, which impaired his ability to navigate the road.

“The truck was overloaded and traveling at night on a difficult road. Preliminary information suggests driver intoxication was a major cause of the accident,” a local resident stated.

The unidentified driver and passengers, now fighting for their lives, are in a critical but stable condition at nearby Kisiizi Hospital. Authorities are working to notify their families.

The status of today’s (January 8th, 2026) scheduled rally, a key campaign event for Hon. Katabazi at St. Paul’s Bucundura Catholic Parish playground, remains unclear in the wake of the tragedy.

Police are expected to issue a formal statement regarding the cause of the accident and the condition of the victims.
