KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda has disqualified 11 candidates from the Makindye Division mayoral race, leaving Yasin Omari, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, unopposed.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The EC’s ruling followed a series of petitions filed by the NRM candidate, which challenged the validity of his opponents’ nomination papers by citing multiple breaches of electoral laws.
Among the grounds for disqualification was the failure of candidates to secure the legally required twenty supporting signatures from each of Makindye Division’s parishes.
The Electoral Commission also cited the registration of individuals who are not bona fide residents of the division, a direct violation of electoral guidelines designed to ensure candidates have a vested interest in the communities they seek to lead.
Among the eleven disqualified contenders is Lusagala Bosco of the National Unity Platform (NUP), whose removal from the race marks a significant setback for the party’s hopes of retaining the mayoral seat.
Makindye Division is currently led by Ali Nganda Mulyanyama, a NUP member, who forwent re-election to instead contest the Makindye East parliamentary seat on the NUP ticket.
With the successful petitions, Yasin Omari now has a clear path to the mayor’s office, unchallenged, barring any unforeseen legal interventions. He is expected to be formally declared the unopposed winner by the EC.
