The altercations began on Monday when NUP supporters allegedly attacked security officers with stones at three separate locations: the party’s headquarters, the Bwaise Roundabout, and the main campaign venue.
The incident occurred despite prior meetings between the Police, the Electoral Commission, and the event’s organizing committee to agree upon venues and routes for the day’s activities.
The Uganda Police Force reported that the violence began at the NUP headquarters, where security officers were attacked with stones.
The statement alleges that similar acts of violence were repeated at the Bwaise Roundabout and at the main campaign venue.
“The hooliganism displayed today is strongly condemned. Such behavior is unacceptable and will be met with firm action,” the police statement read.
Police have confirmed the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the attacks, reaffirming their zero-tolerance approach to election violence.
The police have taken a firm stance against the day’s events and issued a warning, asserting that acts of violence “will be met with firm action.”
The incidents in Kawempe North and South are likely to intensify ongoing discussions about political campaign security and supporter conduct as the election season continues.
