NTUNGAMO, UGANDA – A self-proclaimed born-again pastor is in police custody after a dramatic arrest in a local bar, facing serious allegations of orchestrating the theft of a vehicle from Kampala.

The suspect, identified as Pastor Paul Tumwesigye Buteeka, was apprehended along with an accomplice, one Nuwahereza, at approximately 11:35 PM on Sunday night.

The arrest took place at Rushooka-Rwamanyonyi trading centre in Kayonza Sub-county, Ntungamo district, where the duo was found socializing with women in a bar while in possession of the reportedly stolen car.

Reliable sources indicate that Pastor Tumwesigye, who operates a church in Mutojo Cell, Rubaare Town Council, was attending a birthday party for former Rushenyi County MP Hon. Mwesigwa Rukutana on November 19, 2024, in Kampala.

There, Tumwesigye allegedly convinced a fellow attendee, Owen, to lend him his Toyota Fielder, registration UBL 829T, for a short trip to a nearby village.

The car owner willingly entrusted his vehicle to Pastor Tumwesigye, but the pastor failed to return after a considerable amount of time, causing Owen to grow concerned and subsequently report the matter to the Police.

The case took a decisive turn on November 22, 2024, when officers at Rubaare Police Station, using a tracking device, located the missing vehicle parked in the Rushooka-Rwamanyonyi trading centre with Nuwahereza seated inside.

Upon interrogation, Nuwahereza directed the officers to a nearby bar where Pastor Tumwesigye was allegedly “relaxing with women,” and both suspects were promptly arrested at the scene.

Pastor Tumwesigye and Nuwahereza are now detained in the cells at Rubaare Police Station, following the impounding of the recovered vehicle as evidence.

The two suspects are expected to be transferred to Kampala, the jurisdiction where the original crime of car theft occurred, to face formal charges.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising questions about the conduct of the clergyman and the circumstances leading to the alleged betrayal of trust.
