RUBIRIZI, UGANDA – The simmering frustration of residents in Bururuma Village, Rutoto Sub-county, over persistent livestock theft boiled over this week when a local man was caught red-handed stealing a chicken.

The suspect, identified as Mucunguzi Alex (Salongo), 35, from Bururuma Village, was confronted by residents on Tuesday at Omukidandari Trading Centre while in possession of the stolen fowl.

Upon his arrest, the community imposed a fine of UGX 120,000 on Mucunguzi and compelled him to sign a binding agreement, vowing never to engage in theft again.

Residents, including Mugabe Leonard and Katushabe Jackline, reported significant recent losses, with several goats and over five chickens stolen in just one week.

They appealed for stronger action against habitual offenders, who they believe are often arrested and released too quickly, thereby encouraging further crime.

“Within just one week, we have lost goats and over five chickens. This has caused a lot of fear and tension among us. Many thieves are arrested and released quickly, which only encourages more crime,” the residents lamented.

They suspect Mucunguzi is behind a series of livestock thefts in the area, alleging that stolen animals are slaughtered and consumed in hidden locations.

At the scene, Mucunguzi the suspect confessed to stealing the chicken but denied the other thefts, pleading for forgiveness before accepting the judgment, paying the fine, and committing to reform.

“I admit that I stole this chicken, but I am not the one stealing the goats and other animals as they accuse me. It was a mistake, and I ask for your forgiveness. I have sworn never to involve myself in any kind of theft again in this community,” Alex said.

Mugarura Johnbosco, the local councillor and a neighbour of the suspect, strongly condemned the theft, attributing such crimes to youth indolence.

“I blame this on laziness. Young people are reluctant to engage in productive work,” Mugarura stated.

He urged parents to guide their children better and warned Mucunguzi to reform, emphasizing that leaders and residents will continue collaborating to ensure village peace and security.
