RUBIRIZI, UGANDA – Aspiring candidates in Rubirizi District have been sternly warned against engaging in tribalism, voter bribery, and other illegal practices as the country gears up for the 2026 general elections.

The strong caution was delivered by the Rubirizi District Returning Officer, Nicholas Twinomujuni, during a crucial harmonization meeting between Electoral Commission officials, security agencies, and the contesting MPs and LC5 candidates.

Emphasizing the need for a level playing field, Mr. Twinomujuni called upon all aspirants to exhibit the highest levels of discipline, mutual respect, and proper time management throughout the campaign period.

He reminded both candidates and the electorate that adherence to electoral rules is non-negotiable for achieving peaceful, transparent, and democratic elections.

“We call for discipline and respect, and we warn that breaking electoral guidelines is non-negotiable. Offenders risk disqualification. Our goal is a level playing field for democratic elections,” stated Twinomujuni.

Adding a layer of assurance, the Rubirizi District Police Commander, Lillian Kikobye, pledged that the Police and other sister security agencies would maintain a robust and visible presence across the district to guarantee a peaceful and orderly electoral process.

The DPC, Lillian, asked candidates to treat security officers with respect, while also instructing her personnel to avoid partiality and maintain professionalism.

The candidates welcomed the meeting, acknowledging its role in fostering peace. Bunyaruguru MP contestant Hon. Cadet Benjamin Buturo appreciated the initiative as vital for preventing violence and ensuring a smooth voting process.

“I encourage unity, justice, the use of respectful language, responsible social media conduct, and peaceful campaigns from both my supporters and my fellow candidates,” Buturo said.

The NRM flag bearer for Katerera Constituency, Hon. Muhammed Katoto Kato, described the meeting as successful and urged fellow candidates to respect campaign schedules, while also discouraging the incitement of violence among voters.

“We must remember that we all need each other beyond politics. Those who choose to break the law will, however, face police action,” Hon. Kato remarked.

The meeting signals a collective commitment from electoral officials, security organs, and candidates themselves to uphold the integrity of the 2026 elections in Rubirizi District.
