The suspects were identified as Kiiza Emmanuel, Cyirabo Isaac, Duhimbaze Gilbert, and Bashil Lian, all from Kisoro District, together with a fifth suspect, Mfitundinda Paius, from Kanungu District, both students from a local secondary school.

The group was taken into custody following multiple reports of individuals being attacked and robbed during the night, with incidents peaking on busy market days.

According to Ben Niwamanya Kashumbusha, the Kisoro District Police Commander (DPC), the arrests signal a major step towards restoring residents’ sense of security after weeks of unease.

“We have in our custody five individuals suspected of being the main actors behind the grabbing of mobile phones, blocking of roads to extort money, and other petty crimes that have been troubling our community at night,” DPC Kashumbusha stated.

The DPC confirmed the suspects admitted to a pattern of sneaking out of their dormitories, drinking at municipal bars, and then embarking on criminal activities.

The police commander revealed the investigation is now expanding to target and identify the bars and shops that sold alcohol to the minors, vowing to hold them accountable.

“Our investigations are now focusing on the bars and shops that are selling alcohol to these minors. We are going to take serious legal action against any business found to be in violation of the law. We cannot have our children being lured into crime by irresponsible operators,” Kashumbusha stated.

The police have encouraged the public to continue reporting suspicious activities, assuring them that community safety remains their top priority.
