The suspect in police detention, Turinawe Philimon, 37, is accused of murdering his cohabiting partner, Turinawe Jacenta, 40, in a night-time attack that has sent shockwaves through the local community.

The incident occurred at the couple’s residence in Rumba Cell, Western Ward, Kanungu Town Council, on the night of October 9, 2025, after the two had developed a heated misunderstanding.

Reliable information indicates that the late Turinawe Jacenta had reportedly separated from her first husband, with whom she had five children.

She had built her own house at her parents’ home in Rumba Cell, where she lived with her children, and it was at this residence that Philimon later moved in.

According to sources, after the couple had an argument and went to bed, the suspect allegedly retrieved an axe from the kitchen while Jacenta was asleep and used it to inflict severe head wounds, killing her instantly.

The Kigezi Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed that in a surprising turn of events, the suspect voluntarily turned himself in at the Kanungu Police Station.

Maate stated that a team of police officers, commanded by the Kanungu District DPC, SP Azira, immediately visited the crime scene, where they recorded statements from key witnesses to piece together the events leading to the murder.

“Reliable sources indicated that the two had previous issues of domestic violence. The suspect is in custody, and inquiries are ongoing to establish the motive for the murder,” Maate confirmed.

The police investigation led to the recovery of the suspected murder weapon—an axe with what appeared to be bloodstains—which was found hidden under a bed in the children’s room.

The body of the deceased has been transferred to the mortuary at Katate Health Center IV in Kanungu, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to formally determine the exact cause of death.
