KISORO, UGANDA – The NRM flag bearer for Kisoro Municipality, Hon. Sam Byibesho, has called on parents to take a proactive role in their children’s education by hiring private teachers to facilitate learning from home.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The appeal was made in response to the ongoing industrial action by teachers, which has disrupted learning in numerous tertiary, secondary and primary schools.
The core of the dispute is a protest by arts teachers against the significant salary disparities between themselves and their counterparts in the science department, a government policy they deem discriminatory.
With classrooms standing empty and academic calendars in jeopardy, Byibesho emphasized the urgent need for parental intervention, particularly for candidates preparing for national examinations.
“My message to the parents is that they should dedicate more time to their children, especially those in Primary Seven who are set to sit for their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) this year,” Byibesho stated.
The hopeful legislator advocated for a community-based approach to learning, encouraging children to form study groups for peer-to-peer discussions to continue their educational progress.
Byibesho also called upon the government and the President to urgently address the teachers’ grievances, acknowledging that a lasting solution must come from the state.
“I also want to call upon the government and our President to look into the teachers’ concerns so that the salary increment is made for all teachers. This will bring fairness, discipline, and improved conduct in our schools,” Byibesho added.
Byibesho’s comments highlight a growing sentiment that equal pay would not only resolve the immediate industrial action but also foster a more equitable, motivated, and disciplined teaching workforce, ultimately benefiting the entire education sector.
The strike continues as teachers’ unions and government representatives remain locked in negotiations, leaving parents and students across the nation anxiously awaiting a resolution.
