RUBIRIZI, UGANDA – School administrators have been encouraged to champion healthy and competitive student-level politics, described as a crucial incubator for the nation’s next generation of leaders.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The call was made by Ndekye Secondary School Headteacher Alex Tumuramye Mabwindi during the swearing-in ceremony for the new student government.
As the event’s keynote speaker, Headteacher Mabwindi articulated a powerful vision, drawing a direct connection between student leadership and national service.
He urged educators to foster environments where student politics is practiced with integrity and purpose, arguing that such platforms are essential for “unearthing the hidden young generation of future national-level leaders.”
“Everything happens based on its background. If you examine the backgrounds of our national political leaders, you will find that a significant number of them were school head prefects, head girls, or engaged in some level of school leadership. These roles groomed them for the positions they hold today,” Mabwindi stated.
Shifting focus from the national stage to the school community, Headteacher Mabwindi issued a direct charge to the newly inaugurated student leaders.
He instructed them to be role models by leaving a positive legacy founded on discipline, respect, and academic excellence.
He further urged the incoming team to cooperate closely with teachers in addressing student challenges and to take a firm stand against issues such as school theft.
The headteacher’s message was echoed by the Senior Guidance and Counselling Officer, Mrs. Mary Rukyundeka, who emphasized the core values of effective leadership.
She encouraged the new leaders to respect themselves and others, identifying these principles as the indispensable pillars of a smooth learning environment.
Speaking from her dual perspective as an educator and a parent, Mrs. Rukyundeka inspired the prefects to foster a spirit of unity. She urged them to support and guide one another as a cohesive team dedicated to fulfilling the school’s mission.
In response, the newly sworn-in student leaders pledged to uphold their duties faithfully, committing to ensure fair proceedings and to foster positive staff-student relationships for the school’s effective operation.
The ceremony concluded on a high note, marking the beginning of an administrative term charged with the responsibility of translating these leadership principles into tangible action.
