KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Uganda Police Force has outlined a comprehensive, multi-stakeholder security strategy to ensure the nation’s upcoming electoral process is conducted peacefully and credibly.

The assurance was delivered by the Director of Operations, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Frank Mwesigwa, who spoke this morning at the launch of a national campaign on peaceful elections.

The event, held at the prestigious Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, was organized by the Netherlands Institute for Multi-Party Democracy (NIMD), an organization dedicated to strengthening democratic processes and political cooperation.

Mwesigwa emphasized that robust security is the bedrock of a legitimate democratic exercise, stating during the event that security plays a critical role in ensuring a free, fair, peaceful, and credible electoral process.

He outlined a clear, three-phase security timeline, beginning with a critical Pre-Election Period focused on preventing violence, mitigating tensions, and ensuring a secure campaign environment for all political actors to build trust and set a peaceful tone.

He added that security deployment will be most visible on polling day to protect voters, officials, materials, and polling stations, ensuring citizens can vote without fear, and that forces will remain vigilant post-results to manage celebrations, protests, and any potential disputes to maintain public order and safety.

Mwesigwa emphasized that the security measures would be a collaborative effort conducted in coordination with the Electoral Commission (EC), political actors, civil society, the media, and the community, rather than a unilateral police operation.

The campaign launch by the NIMD underscores the international community’s interest in supporting stable and democratic processes in Uganda.
