RUBANDA, UGANDA – The community of Mungaara cell, Rubanda District, is reeling in shock after a 41-year-old man was allegedly murdered by his 16-year-old daughter following a dispute over her pet rabbit.

The deceased has been identified as Deusi Tukacungurwa, and the suspect, his biological daughter Orikiriza Sarah, was also a resident of Mungaara cell, Kyenyi parish, Muko sub-county.

Sources indicate the tragic event, which unfolded on the evening of January 16, 2025, began when the wife of the deceased, Tumuheise Mary, left their home early that morning to dig in a distant garden.

She had gone to the garden with one of their children, leaving her husband Deusi asleep in the house with their other children, but upon returning home at approximately 8:30 PM, she was met with the horrifying scene of her husband lying lifeless in a pool of blood.

The children who had been left at home were nowhere to be seen. Alarmed, she immediately alerted her neighbours, who arrived with a torchlight and confirmed her worst fears: Deusi Tukacungurwa was dead.

Shortly after the discovery, one of the couple’s daughters, 7-year-old Miracle Trust, returned home from a neighbour’s house. It was her testimony that provided the first crucial leads to the police.

Miracle told her mother and neighbors that at around 6:00 PM, she witnessed her father killing her older sister Sarah’s rabbit and subsequently ran to the grazing field to inform her.

Enraged by the news, Orikiriza allegedly returned home, retrieved a panga a type of machete and attacked her sleeping father, striking him multiple times in the head before fleeing the scene, which led to his death.

The Kigezi Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, noting that the area Local Council chairman, Bambabura Steven, was the one who informed the police.

A team of officers responded promptly, visiting and processing the crime scene. The scene was documented, and relevant statements were recorded from witnesses.

Maate confirmed that the alleged murder weapon, a panga, was recovered from the scene and that a postmortem examination has been conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

“After the daughter, Orikiriza Sarah, killed her father, Deusi Tukacungurwa, she dressed well and moved away. However, inquiries are underway, and efforts to have the suspect arrested are being made,” Maate stated.

The case has sent ripples through the rural community, highlighting a tragic escalation of a domestic dispute into a fatal act of violence.
