KAMPALA, UGANDA – The President of Uganda, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and His Highness the Aga Khan are launching the Aga Khan University (AKU) in Kampala today, September 11, 2025.

The high-profile event is the centerpiece of a two-day official visit by the spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and founder of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
His Highness the Aga Khan arrived at Entebbe International Airport on the evening of Wednesday, September 10, 2025, and was received in a ceremonial welcome by Uganda’s Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng.
Following his arrival, the Aga Khan proceeded to State House, Entebbe, for a meeting with President Museveni and the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni.
Beyond the university launch, the Aga Khan’s itinerary includes officiating at the commissioning ceremony for the construction of the new Aga Khan Hospital, a project poised to revolutionize specialized medical care in the country.
His Highness will also meet with members of Uganda’s Ismaili community, whom he leads as their spiritual guide.
Dr. Diana Ssewanyana of Aga Khan University Hospital highlighted its immediate regional impact and patient-centric philosophy, stating the facility is already receiving patients from as far as Burundi and accepts all forms of payment and insurance.
She revealed that the new facilities are strategically designed to end medical tourism by bringing world-class tertiary care for complex conditions like cancer, cardiology, and hematology directly to Uganda.
The launch of Aga Khan University represents more than a new building; it is the culmination of a deep-rooted partnership and a bold step toward making exceptional education and life-saving medical treatment accessible across East Africa.
