Kisoro Police Ramp Up Security Ahead of Tense NRM Primaries Re-run

Kisoro, Uganda – The Kisoro District Police have announced plans to deploy heavily in Bufumbira South Constituency ahead of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary elections re-run scheduled for Tuesday.

This follows last Thursday’s suspension of voting in seven villages Kanyenka, Migeshi, Murambi, Nyabitare, Kabaya, Karambi, and Bushoka after protests erupted over the use of the official voter register. Election officials were unable to verify voters’ names due to the disruptions.

During a weekly security briefing, Kisoro District Police Commander (DPC) Ben Niwamanya Kashumbusaha confirmed increased deployments to ensure a smooth electoral process.

He issued a stern warning, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward electoral misconduct.

“We have received intelligence reports indicating that some individuals plan to travel to these villages to incite violence during the elections. Security will be tight, and we will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone involved in violence, voter intimidation, or any form of electoral malpractice,” Kashumbusaha said.

Meanwhile, Kisoro NRM Elections Officer Tadeo Majambere reiterated that only voters listed on the official register will be allowed to cast their ballots.

The suspension last week came after some voters rejected the register, a situation Majambere attributed to possible bribery by multiple candidates, which led to confusion.

The NRM primaries have been marred by controversies nationwide, including allegations of voter bribery, intimidation, and violence.

Authorities hope that heightened security and strict adherence to the voter register will ensure a transparent and peaceful electoral process.
