Kigezi Rolls Out Sub-County Policing Model to Boost Grassroots Security

Kabale, Uganda – The Kigezi region has commenced the immediate operationalization of its sub-county policing model, with all assigned personnel now at the regional headquarters awaiting deployment to their respective districts.

According to the Kigezi Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the strategic rollout aims to enhance grassroots security coordination across the mountainous southwestern region.

Maate revealed that trained officers reporting to Kigezi Regional Headquarters are currently being transported to assume duties in Kabale, Kisoro, Rukungiri, and Rubanda districts.

The model establishes dedicated police teams at each sub-county level, creating what commanders describe as “a security web” to improve emergency response and crime prevention.

The new police units are equipped with standard gear, motorcycles for rural access, and 24-hour monitoring systems – a move leaders welcome for tackling slow response times in remote areas.

Kigezi has become the seventh region to implement localized policing under President Museveni’s 2023 nationwide directive, adopting the model after successful pilots in Lango and Busoga achieved 38% and 42% crime reduction, respectively.

Police anticipate full operational status across all 87 Kigezi sub-counties within 72 hours, with a regional review scheduled after 30 days to assess the impact on crime patterns and community relations.
