Parliament Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa emphasized the need for urgent action to address issues such as low Gross National Income (GNI) from big tech, internet tax concerns, the urban-rural digital divide, and Africa’s limited share in the global digital economy.

“The current state of our internet ecosystem demands immediate attention. We must work together to ensure that Uganda benefits from the digital economy and that our citizens are protected from emerging threats,” Tayebwa stressed.

Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, praised the establishment of the UP-IGF, noting its alignment with the Ministry’s efforts to expand the national fibre optic backbone.

“This forum is timely, and we look forward to working with all stakeholders to develop a robust digital ecosystem,” Minister Baryomunsi said.

Anja Genjo, NRI Coordinator at UNIGF, highlighted the importance of collaborative and inclusive approaches in building a digital future.

“Let this year’s theme guide us in our efforts to promote digital rights, protect users, and support the development of Uganda’s digital ecosystem,” Anja urged.

The UP-IGF aims to focus on key areas, including protecting Ugandan internet users from scams and cyber harassment, promoting digital rights such as inclusion and freedom of expression, and supporting the development of Uganda’s digital ecosystem and policy frameworks.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the UP-IGF provides a critical platform for stakeholders to engage, discuss, and shape the future of internet governance in Uganda.
