Electricity Regulatory Authority to Reduce Electricity Annual Tariffs to 5.2%.

KAMPALA – UGANDA: The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Ruth Nankabirwa has appreciated the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) for reducing annual Tariff to 5.2%.

The was after the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) Board Chairperson, Sarah Wasagali, announced a reduction in electricity tariffs in Uganda which will make power more affordable to users.

Speaking at the Release of the 2025 electricity tariffs today Thursday, the ERA chairperson, Dr.Sarah Kanaabi Wasagali announced a reduction plan for the first quarter of the new year which runs between January and March.

Dr.Sarah Kanaabi added that the Annual Tariff for domestic consumers will reduce from shs 803.0 to shs 606.2 per unit, commercial consumers will now pay shs575.2 from shs 606.2 per unit.

The medium manufacturers will pay shs 417.8 per unit, large manufacturing industries will pay shs 351.5 while those involved in service will now pay shs 367.1 per unit.

Ruth Nankabirwa said that making the cost of electricity affordable will support industrialization, fostering socio-economic transformation and lead to saving the sector, the end user consumer and the economy UGX 155 billion.

“I thank the Electricity Regulatory Authority for undertaking its statutory duties promptly, including the determination of the 2025 Annual Tariffs and the significant milestone of a 5.2% reduction in the Weighted Average End-User Tariff.” Nankabirwa noted.

The Chief Executive Officer of Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) Eng. Ziria Tibalwa Waako said that the applicable tariffs are set to supply licensees with revenues adequate to cover reasonable levels of its operating costs.

“The applicable tariffs are set to provide licensees with revenues adequate to cover reasonable levels of its operating costs, the recovery of invested capital and profits and, provide incentives to reduce costs and operate efficiently,” said Eng. Ziria.

The reduction in electricity tariffs to the expected demand grows at an annual rate of approximately 10.4% with energy purchased by a new company Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) increasing.
