KAMPALA – UGANDA: The Rushenyi County Member of Parliament Naome Kabasharira has re echoed calls for the downsizing of Parliament noting the current number of MPs are too many for the country.

Hon. Kabasharira urged fellow MPs to back her proposal saying the move won’t affect the current MPs but rather those seeking to join the other Parliaments.
“Last year, I brought a motion to your office and you willingly received it, and I was given a letter from your office that it was sent to the Attorney General to guide. The motion was to downsize this Parliament. How long does the Attorney General take to reply such a small thing and he is the only one we can rely on? And downsizing will not be you people, it will be those who are coming, you will not be affected. We need to downsize, we are too many for the country,” noted Kabasharira.
The current 11th Parliament has 529 MPs each earning 35,000,000 Uganda shillings, equivalent to €8,427 plus allowances making them the most paid than most MPs in the European Union.
Ahead of their monthly pay, every member of parliament, regardless of whether he has been reelected, is given 200,000,000 shillings, or €48,157 to buy a new vehicle at the beginning of a new 5-year term.
It had been earlier discovered that the monthly salary of MPs in the EU, it is only MPs from Italy at €10,435, Austria with €10,134 and Germany with €9,082 who earn more than Ugandan MPs.
It should be remembered that in Africa, Legislators in larger economies like Egypt, Algeria, Angola, Ethiopia and Tanzania earn far less than Ugandan Member of Parliament.
