Kisoro, Uganda – Falling debris at Kabeshero sand mine in Kisoro district ended the life of a young man on Thursday morning while quarrying sand.
The deceased has been identified as Niyonsaba Ozius, 25, a Mufumbira resident of Gakoro village, Rwingwe parish, Nyakabande sub-county, Kisoro district.
Sources have it that Niyonsaba Ozius had attended morning prayers at Gakoro Catholic Church with his wife and mother before heading to the sand mine.
Moments later, his mother, Mukankusi Gertrude, received the devastating news that her son had been covered by falling rocks and died.
The Kigezi police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed that the incident was reported to Mutolere police post and later to Kisoro police station.
The scene was visited and documented by police officers, including O/C post Mutolere, and statements were obtained from available witnesses, including the mother and brother of the deceased.
“An entry of sudden death was made at Mutolere police post, later Kisoro police station reported by one Rwerekana Michael, the area chairperson Gakoro village. The scene was visited by O/C post Mutolere police post PC Ntakirutimana Seith and other police officers. Statements from available witnesses, including the mother and the brother of the deceased, were obtained.” Said ASP Elly Maate.
Maate further confirmed that a postmortem was conducted, and the body was handed over to the relatives for burial and inquiries are still ongoing to identify any potential causes or contributing factors.
