KISORO, UGANDA – The Mpanga Basin Community Development Initiative, led by Rtd. Maj. Julius Rubahimbya, is championing the commercial cultivation of African birds eye chili (pilipili) as a pathway to economic prosperity for farmers in Bufumbira North.

The campaign gained significant momentum during a recent training session held at the Kumudege Business Centre, a facility owned by the area legislator, Hon. Kamara John Nizeyimana.
Addressing a gathering of eager residents, Maj. Rubahimbya emphasized the critical need to maximize agricultural output by changing mindsets about land use.
He urged the adoption of high-yield practices like pilipili cultivation on small plots to combat poverty and leverage Uganda’s fertile soils for economic benefit.
The African birds eye chili, renowned for its high local and international market demand due to its pungency and diverse uses, offers farmers a more lucrative return on investment than traditional crops.
The message resonated deeply with the attendees, who expressed strong optimism about the project’s potential to elevate their living standards.Many residents directly linked the initiative to their local representative, thanking Hon. Kamara for his support.

Hon. Kamara John Nizeyimana, who also serves as the chairperson of all local leaders in Kisoro District, confirmed that while the project will eventually expand, his constituents will be the primary beneficiaries during its crucial initial phases.
“This is a project for our people. While we plan to extend it to other areas in the future, 90% of its immediate benefits are dedicated to the people of Bufumbira North,” Nizeyimana stated.
With unwavering conviction, he issued a rallying call for full community participation, framing the high-value chili project as an essential cornerstone for sustainable local development and long-term prosperity.
